It can be devastating to see the gleaming, lustrous paint of your prized vehicle fade over time. The good news is, preserving your vehicle’s finish is not difficult, but you need to take some precautions!

Preserving the finish of your vehicle is vital for two reasons. The first reason is that a car’s paint job will not last forever, and it must be taken care of if you want it to last as long as possible. Secondly, a well-maintained finish can help your car look newer longer than one with an unkempt appearance.

The following great tips will help you preserve your vehicle’s finish.

Wash and Dry Your Vehicle Regularly

One of the easiest ways to preserve your vehicle’s finish is by washing and drying it regularly. This is especially important if you live in warm, dry climates where there are few adverse weather conditions to deal with.

To preserve your vehicle’s finish as much as possible during the winter months, try to dust off snow and ice as much as possible after every storm.

The most common mistake people make when washing their car is using the wrong type of soap or detergent. Regular detergent has a higher pH, which will strip the wax or sealant from your vehicle. Specialty soaps and detergents are formulated to be gentle on paint.

In order to avoid scratching the paint when wiping down a wet surface, before drying it with a towel or cloth, use a fresh newspaper page to do the job. Just remember not to get any ink on your paint.

Wax Your Vehicle

If you want to preserve your vehicle’s finish, waxing is essential. There are many reasons why waxing a car can maintain the paint. One of these is that wax protects against harmful UV rays and oxidization (which will cause the color of your vehicle to change).

Waxes protect the paint from UV rays, acid rain, bird droppings, tree sap, and other external damage that can compromise the original color of your vehicle’s finish. It also prevents the paint from chipping and getting scratched.

Use Paint Sealant

If you want something even better than wax, then try paint sealant!

Paint sealant is a liquid coating, usually made from either acrylic or silicone polymers with additives designed to protect the paint. These products are applied to freshly washed and dried surfaces in an aerosol can or by hand. The product will flow over the surface of your vehicle’s finish creating a transparent barrier that seals out liquids, dirt, and grime while making your car easy to clean.

It is as effective as wax, only better. The sealant lasts much longer than wax, and you have to reapply it once after every four to six months.

Park Your Vehicle in the Shade

It’s imperative that you park your car in the shade whenever possible. It can be done by parking under a tree or off to one side of a building where there is no direct sunlight on your vehicle.
